The World for a Girl

Walking is a lonely game
Dark streets, empty
Every other light post is out
A bird takes flight from pavement
I jump back, squealing
Mind racing
Who could be hiding behind that bush?
A strong man
In his mind, I am the one
The vulnerable girl
Not for my money but for my body
Stop, look, breathe
Shake the thought and keep walking
Who can see me?
Shoulders back, don’t look weak
A figure up ahead
I must cross to the other sidewalk
In fear
He’s yelling at me
He’s yelling at me
Oh my God, he’s yelling at me
Don’t acknowledge
Pick up pace, pray he doesn’t follow
I picture my supple, white bed
How I long to be comfortable again
Don’t forget the goal
Eyes scanning, heart racing
Keep walking
